As the city recovers from the pandemic, the new immersive exhibition “The Living Portrait of NYC” aims to let residents connect and “feel seen.”

In a darkened room of a new exhibition in New York City, Elise Brown and Janelle Mosley stood reminiscing about their arrival in the city as images of New Yorkers flashed across the walls. Now in their early 30s, they moved to the city together in 2013 from St. Louis, Missouri, without work lined up. They were roommates in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, with “no jobs, but big dreams,” said Brown.

Nearly a decade later, the two friends both work in finance — and still call the city home. In New York, “you find yourself or lose yourself — sometimes on the same day,” added Brown.
