Lady Gaga's father Joe Germanotta has slammed the star's native New York while reflecting on how his business has been hit by soaring crime rates.

On Thursday, the restaurateur, 65, who owns Italian restaurant Joanne Trattoria in Manhattan's Upper West Side, appeared on Fox Business Network's Mornings with Maria to discuss crime and inflation in the city.

The star's dad, who was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was asked by host Maria Bartiromo how New York 'feels to him', to which he had strong words.

He said: 'I think the city is a mess. It looks horrible. People coming from Connecticut and Long Island, maybe they're going to Lincoln Center for a show...

'Then they're walking around, it smells like weed everywhere. The city looks terrible, from just probably four years ago. It's dirtier, there's a lot more people out on the street. It seems filthy.'

In February 2020, The Wall Street Journal reported that Joe was holding back $260k (£214.3k) in rent to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) for his other establishment Art Bird & Whiskey Bar which is in Grand Central Station.

He explained at the time that he wanted to be freed from his lease - which rings in at $50k (£41.2k) - as he could not afford to continue paying.

He went on to tell The New York Post: 'The homeless go in there to stay warm. We're compassionate, but it affects our customers. When the homeless invade our areas, it becomes a less attractive place.'
