Most of the claims involve the New York Police Department, according to a new report from the New York City comptroller.

New York City has paid more than a half-billion dollars in settlements to vehicle crash victims over the past decade, with the majority of claims made against the city’s police department, a new report shows.

Payments to people injured in incidents involving city vehicles rose between fiscal 2012 and fiscal 2021, despite the number of claims made against the city shrinking, according to the report from New York City Comptroller Brad Lander. The dynamic suggests that the crashes are more severe and result in death or life-altering injuries to those suing, the report said.
