Chances are you’re familiar with Pose star/soon-to-be EGOT winner/reigning king of the red carpet Billy Porter…but just how much do you know about his husband? Ya, that’s right—Billy is taken, and he and his husband, Adam Smith, actually tied the knot all the way back in January 2017. However, their love story goes even farther back, starting with a dinner party in Hell’s Kitchen, where Billy made *sure* he was seated next to Adam (ya love to see it).

And FYI, Adam (who’s made several red carpet appearances with his hubby) isn’t just arm candy. He’s also a super-successful businessman and designer with an exciting new endeavor coming in summer 2022 (more on that later, promise). He and Billy legit have le cutest love story, so let’s get into it, shall we?

Adam didn’t initially plan on pursuing business

Although he ended up following a v different career path, it seems like Adam initially aspired to become a performer like his husband. Before meeting Billy, Adam attended the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied theater and graduated with a BFA in 2003, per his LinkedIn.

It’s unclear why he decided to make the switch, but soon after graduating, he started working as a sales rep for Marchon Eyewear, and his luxury eyewear career took off from there.

He was co-owner of a luxury eyewear brand

After working for a variety of designer brands—including Chanel, Jil Sander Eyewear, and Dita Eyewear, Adam became co-owner of Native Ken, which was originally founded by brothers Christos and Tom Tsiplakos in 2010. Adam joined the team in 2016, although it seems like he’s since moved on to other endeavors.

In October 2021, Adam posted a ~mysterious~ photo of a logo simply reading “The Smith Society” on IG and tagged Billy in the post, along with their friend Andrew Egan, who’s a creative director and photographer. His caption for the post: “Coming Summer 2022. ⚡️” IDK what’s happening, but it seems major!!

He and Billy met at a dinner party

Not long after Adam made the move from Los Angeles to New York City, he met Billy at a mutual friend’s dinner party in February 2009. The two hit it off right away—but as it turns out, that was no accident. As Adam told People during a 2017 interview, “I sat next to Billy. I found out later that wasn’t by accident!”

The two went on to date ~casually~ for just about a year before they decided to go their separate ways, but luckily, they remained close…and in 2015, they decided to give their romance another shot. “It had been marinating within me, my love for him and figuring it out and coming to terms with it, over the years,” Adam explained to People. “So I knew that it was on me if I wanted to ever change anything; I would have to be the first one to approach the subject.”

And on Billy’s 46th birthday, after seeing a performance of Hamilton, he and Adam finally got back together over dinner.

He planned his wedding in just 10 days

Once the lovebirds got back together, things moved real fast. In December 2015, just a few months after their reconciliation, Billy popped the question during a double date with friends in London, and a little more than two weeks after that, Adam and Billy tied the knot. The reason for the hastily planned nuptials: They wanted to get married before former president Donald Trump was sworn into office.

As Adam explained to People, “We were discussing, and Billy had actually brought up to me that it’s important for us to get married while [Barack] Obama is still president and before January 20. So we sat down and figured out when we could make it work before the 20th.”

Luckily, they pulled it off (and did a pretty fabulous job of it too) with an intimate wedding that took place on January 14. “I should create How to Plan a Fabulous Wedding in 10 Days because I had 10 days!” Adam later joked to Playbill. “It was so much fun and it was a whirlwind. But it all turned out more beautifully than I could ever imagine.”

He was previously married

According to the New York Times, Adam tied the knot with someone else before getting married to Billy, but the marriage ended in divorce. He’s never spoken publicly about his first marriage, so it’s unclear who Adam was married to or how long the marriage lasted.

He has tons of nieces and nephews

Adam has two sisters, Adria and Allison, and between them, Adam now has at least nine nieces and nephews. And up until recently, it didn’t seem like he and Billy planned to have any kids of their own. “We love children!” Adam told People back in 2017. “But I think we’re gonna be guncles.” However, Billy told the Hollywood Reporter in 2021 that they’re “trying to have a family,” so TBD!!

In the meantime, Adam and Billy have a furbaby—a cockapoo named Bader “Lola” Majors—who they adopted soon after their four-year wedding anniversary. She even has her own IG account, naturally.

He is Billy’s biggest supporter in all things

Just take one look at Adam’s IG and you’ll know he’s S-M-I-T-T-E-N with his hubs. He seems like Billy’s biggest cheerleader through every project, role, and development in Billy’s life, and he stood by Billy’s side throughout the worst of COVID-19 too, when Billy (who’s immunocompromised) was extra exposed. Back in 2007, Billy was diagnosed HIV positive, although he didn’t go public with his status until nearly 14 years later. Then in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, he and Adam rented a house on Long Island, where Billy was able to finally confront his past trauma.

After Billy opened up about his HIV status during a tell-all interview with the Hollywood Reporter in May 2021, Adam took to IG to praise his husband’s bravery. “I’m deeply grateful to be married to such a courageous person as @theebillyporter,” Adam captioned a photo of Billy’s cover story. “You inspire me every day. Thank you for telling your truth, breaking stigma, and helping others. I love you.”

Can’t wait to see what’s next on these two’s journey.
